Electrodeionization (EDI)
A combination of membrane separation and ion exchange processes has been used to achieve high purity water production. EDI is a hybrid of that process; combining semi-impermeable membrane technology with ion-exchange media results in a high-efficiency demineralization process that produces high purity industrial process water while using less than 95 percent of the chemical products used in the conventional ion exchange processes.
What is electrodeionization?
Electrically-driven water treatment technology is used to remove ionized and ionizable species from feedwater through a continuous, chemical-free process that eliminates the storage and handling of hazardous chemicals used for resin regeneration.
EDI effectively produces water used in various industries, most notably, residual water in the food and beverage industry, chemical production, biotechnology, electronics, cosmetics, laboratories, the pharmaceutical industry, and producing boiler feed water.
Advantages of Electrodeionization
In addition to reliable performance reviews, EDI filtration technology can be used in lieu of the million gallons of acid and caustic chemicals required by more traditional processes.
EDI produces high purity water that can be used for power plant boiler feed or microchip rinse water and is more energy and cost-efficient. The elimination of periodic regeneration of ion exchange resin adds environmental benefits to the list of perks.
Other benefits of electrodeionization over conventional systems include simple and continuous operation, the complete elimination of chemicals for regeneration, cost-effectiveness, lower power consumption, decrease in pollutant potential, safety, the complete removal of dissolved inorganic particles, and a 99.9 percent removal rate when used in combination with reverse osmosis pre-treatment.
Disadvantages of electrodeionization
EDI is limited to cannot be used with water having a hardness higher than one. It requires purification pre-treatment, and carbon dioxide freely passes through a reverse osmosis membrane raising water conductivity.Diamond Water Systems is a leading provider of water filtration systems for industrial, municipal, and commercial applications.
